Nigeria counterterrorism efforts receive U.S. military support as American advisers arrive to help combat Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province attacks.
The authorities say a growing number of citizens are being illegally recruited to fight elsewhere.
Another possibility is Jama’a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin ( JNIM ), a group linked to al-Qaeda that has been active in the Sahel and across the border in Benin. It formally announced its presence in Nigeria in October with an attack in Kwara state. More recently, new militant groups have emerged in the forests along the Benin border (see map).
Nigeria is facing a longstanding jihadist insurgency in the northeast, a conflict between farmers and herders in north-central regions, separatist violence in the southeast and kidnappings for ransom in the northwest.
