Freedom Friday! A Common Murre was brought to PWC in late January from Oceano. The adult bird was reportedly found weak on the beach. Common Murres are black and white seabirds, (sometimes mistaken for penguins), that live on the open ocean. Their name comes from the murmuring sound like a cross between a purr and a growl they make when communicating with each other. Murres dive and literally fly underwater regularly going a hundred feet deep to catch fish. A Common Murre found on the beach is i

Check out this common murre calling out for his chick with an anchovy in his beak. The sounds between common murre dads and their chicks can be heard throughout our whale watching rides. They nest in large colonies on oceanside bare rock ledges where both parents work together to incubate their egg and care for their chick. Once the chick is able to jump from the cliff into the ocean, dad takes over until the chick becomes independent. Video by Cheré Moms Whale Watching. | Moms Whale Watching

We think the best gift a wild animal can receive is the gift of freedom, and that's exactly what this Common Murre received on Boxing Day! This seabird came in after finding itself stuck in some rocks near shore; one of our awesome volunteers and a very kind member of the public worked together to safely contain the Murre and get it to Wild ARC in record time! This video was taken shortly before the Murre's release, where it is proving to the rehab team that it can swim and find food properly af

Shale the common murre checking in during a scale session! Our Bird of the Week is one of the more reserved common murres at the ASLC, but he does attend scale sessions once he sees his friends have joined in. Check out this Common Murre patient live feeding in one of our aquatic species recovery tubs! This murre came to us after being found in Ogunquit and showing signs of eye and wing injury. As you can see from this video, this murre is still able to hunt despite continuing to show signs of eye injury. Live feeding is only possible thanks to our new aquatic species recovery room specially built for species like murre that dive for their prey including fish and crustaceans! | Center for Wildlife

Check out these Common Murres bathing and preening vigorously in our seabird pool! 🔊 Volume on to hear them calling! Preening – rearranging feather barbs – is an essential routine for all birds, and especially important for birds who live on water. The feather density and feather structure keep aquatic birds like these murres totally waterproof. Did you learn Common Murres are the DEEPEST DIVERS in our area from our post yesterday? They have been recorded diving to 590 ft underwater!! Although

🌳🌊 Meet the mysterious Marbled Murrelet, a tree-nesting… seabird?! Nicknamed the “Elevated Auk,” this quail-sized marvel insists on commuting. While most seabirds stick to the ocean, the Marbled Murrelet flies up to 55 miles inland to nest high in old-growth treetops. This wasn't confirmed in modern ornithology until 1974, when one was spotted in a nest 147 feet up a Douglas fir! With mottled chocolate-and-cream feathers, lightning fast wing-flaps, and a habit of producing eerily cute keer cal
