The bell-shaped vermilion flowers of cardinal-flower (Lobelia cardinalis, a.k.a. red lobelia) are perfectly adapted to be pollinated by hummingbirds. Flower spikes reach three to six feet in height and bloom from bottom to top over a period of several weeks.
